Time, Reading, WP and Cheating Bloggers

It’s Monday today. It was Monday yesterday. I’m sure, if I ask someone what tomorrow is, the answer will be Monday.

 

I feel like I’m caught up in a Monday cycle.

 

I haven’t been posting much lately, caught up in a few things – reading, lazing, doing more revisions on Heir of Doom (the second installment in the Roxanne Fosch series), writing articles for Conscious Talk Magazine, taking care of my kids, you know, same old, same old.

 

And then there’s the wordpress issue. I’m a believer of the  ‘I follow back’ policy, which means I follow whoever follows me, like whoever likes my post, comment back on the post of whoever left a comment on a post of mine. But I’ve noticed that there are bloggers who will give you a follow, wait for you to follow back, then promptly unfollow you. So there I was, fool that I am, with over 3k+ blogs I follow according to my WP manager, most of whom don’t even know what my blog is about. I called them the cheating bloggers, because that’s what they’re doing, increasing their list of followers by deceiving bloggers into following them.

So for the past week or so, I’m cleaning up wp, unfollowing all the names I know I’ve been following for a while, leaving likes and comments and being completely ignored. I’ve managed to unfollow hundreds, and already my reader feels more uncluttered and manageable, though I still have hundreds to unfollow yet.

 

I’m not sure yet how I’ll be able to tell apart the cheating bloggers and the authentic ones – any ideas? – But I’m thinking about taking the time to unfollow the bloggers that ignore my presence every two or three months. It’ll be boring and I’d probably give up the second or third time around, so I’ll need to figure out some other solution soon. If you have any, I’m all ears.

Well, that’s it, my reading list for July. Note that at the beginning of the post I mentioned being lazy. I don’t usually read these many books, but, what can I say, I got into a crazed reading binge.

    1. I know. I follow a lot of different blogs – i enjoy a variety of topics – and i post different stuff too, so i don’t think it’s weird when a blogger with a strange topic starts following me – i just go ahead and return the favor.

  3. Worse than not liking or commenting back to me are the “useless comments”.
    E.g. Great post, Congrats (after an award post), a million smileys.

    You have every right to do delete people! I have been doing the same lately 😉

      1. If someone comments something like that, don’t ever believe they have read.
        It’s just an easy way out, because it always fit.

        Trust me, I have seen people commenting laughing smileys for a VERY serious topic just it contained a sarcastic “funny” in the title.

      4. some bloggers will copy paste the same comment over and over on multiple posts, across multiple blogs. Most of these automatically go to my spam folder, but for those who don’t i do return the favor.

      5. I presume I am fortunate that theirs and mine are different paths. I do, however, say “congratulations” or “condolences” if the situation arises and frequently feel that the fewer words offered in some situations are better. (Obviously it’s not because I *can’t* write more. 😀 )

      6. I don’t complain about these bloggers. In fact, i do return the favor whenever they like or comment on my posts.This post talks about the ones who trick you into following them, then once you do, they unfollow you.

    2. I don’t think they’re the worse, but I do know what you mean. There’s a particular blogger who’s always leaving the same comment on my post as well as on other bloggers I follow. But I don’t have a problem with them, I simply return the favor and leave them that same comment on their post. My problem is with the bloggers who trick me into following them only to unfollow me.

  4. I used to follow back everyone who followed me but then I realized I was following people who’s content I wasn’t interested in. So what I started doing was when someone follows me I go to their profile and go through some of their posts and see if I am interested in in. If I am I follow them if not then I don’t bother. Every now and then I will go through the people I am following and get rid of blogs who are no longer active and that has seemed to work for me so far.

      1. I don’t like to be cluttered with stuff that I would never read. I feel like following a blog that I would never read and never interact with is pointless. It doesn’t benefit me and ultimately it doesn’t benefit that person. Yes it gives them an extra follower but most bloggers that I know like the interaction their not just looking for followers granted there are people who only care about the follows.

      2. what if this person always likes your posts and leaves occasional comments? I mean, you do post things that aren’t book related. Maybe they enjoy the more personal aspect you post, or connect with that personal part of your post in a way.

      3. I’ve noticed that most of the people who follow me that I don’t follow back never interact with me. If someone follows me but I don’t follow them yet the comment on posts I will comment back. If they are continuously commenting then I will go back through there posts again and decide if I want to follow them. I have done that a couple of times but like I said most of the time the people I don’t follow back don’t interact and sometimes the ones I do follow don’t interact.

  5. I TOTALLY understand!! There are so many people who will look up something or go to someone’s blog with a lot of followers and just follow everyone on that. They never even look at the blog. They hit the follow button and go on their merry way hoping to entice some of these people to their page without and work on their part. Out of over 500 followers, I have maybe 30 that actually actively look at my posts. The rest just sit on my followers list to make it look like I’m popular, I guess. Ha ha!!
    By the way, sorry you haven’t heard from me for a while (I’m not saying this because of this post!) things have been really crazy at work. But, tomorrow things should calm down, you’ll be getting an email from me in the next couple of days!

    1. Haha, Nicole, i have over 1k+ followers, but i’d say only about 10% of them do drop by my post and read what i write. But i’m not talking about them, i’m talking about those who follow, wait for me to follow back, then promptly unfollow me.
      And no worry, i haven’t been posting much lately, so you didn’t miss much, if anyting at all. And the e-mail part, take your time, no pressure.

  7. First of all, we wrote almost the same blogs with respect to reading more and having less time to blog!! Hahahah that’s so cool! Psi powers😎 on the other subject, I actually follow the same logic as mistybookspace- I check out their blogs and if I find them interesting then I follow them back😊 I’m really new to the WordPress follow or being followed race so I guess I don’t have much insight on this yet😊 I just enjoy blogging currently and am hoping I make at least some stranger’s day with my blog 😊 also, can’t wait for heir of doom!

  8. A good indicator of genuine bloggers/followers is when they leave comments. Although people tend to leave invariably positive feedback, it still indicates they read your post.

    Rikki and I have just finished reading all the comments and we are like “They’re talking about us.” We’ve only just started blogging. We are still trying to figure out all the buttons and bobs. Please everyone give us time to learn the ropes thereafter we will have time to read all the blogs thoroughly. We are totally amazed at people’s ideas and creativity and it is so inspiring. When someone follows us we are so grateful we rapidly follow them back to show our appreciation for their acceptance of our mediocre amateur little start up blog.
    So please all just follow us and we’ll follow you back 😂😂😂😂

    1. Nah, I wasn’t talking about you guys. You just dropped me a follow two days ago, I think, and I followed back. We all made our mistakes when we first started blogging, that’s why I don’t unfollow someone at once if they don’t come around to my blog. All the blogs I unfollowed this past week are blogs I’ve been liking and commenting on for months. The comments get a reply, but that’s as far as they come to acknowledge me . when I had the time to go through my reader everyday, that wasn’t an issue, but now my reader is so full, I don’t have the time to get to the regulars, and they deserve better.

  10. I’m a beginner here – only about 300 followers – but I can usually tell who’s actually reading my stuff – those who occasionally choose to comment. It doesn’t have to be often but a comment every couple of months or so speaking in a meaningful way to content is a sure sign.

I can’t speak for everyone, but i usually read the title and the first few lines of a post. if it interests me, i continue reading, if not, i move on. i always leave a liken, but sometimes i don’t have any comment to add to the post.on a side note, i do leave comments on your blog, but i never got a reply. do you get them or do they go to spam?

      2. I left a comment on your blog a couple hours ago. If you don’t see it, maybe i’m being shuffled to spam, the thing has been hoarding a lot of my comments. I can’t remember the previous comments i left on your blog, but one of them was on for ‘briefcase’ by Jim Butcher. If one of my comments is in spam, chances are all of them are there and will keep going there until you unspam mmy comments. That is, if you’d like to receive them on the first.

        It was nice of you to purchase the copy of the book to support the author, but book reviewers, as a general rule, receive free copies in exchange of reviews. If you are interested to exploit this side, i can send you to a site that connects readers with authors. And just fyi, authors are glad to have someone read and review – poiting out the positive and negative -. I for one, distributed over fifty copies of my debut novel in exchange of honest reviews. 300 followers is not a small number by the way.

  11. The bloggers that get on my nerves are the ones who will LIKE 5 of my posts in a one minute time period, thus letting me know that they did not take the time to read any of them. And there are the pesky bloggers, who never make a comment, but they like all of my comments and I get 12 emails because they could not stop pressing the like button, so annoying.

    2. haha. A few months back a blogger showed up and started liking my posts. I think the blogger stopped on thirty some in two minutes.wp sent me a notification congratulating me, saying that my blog is doing so well, the likes are soaring. and then the next day, that blogger liked another huge amount of my posts again, and then again on the third day. wp still states that day as the best day for likes on my blog. And then you get the blogger who likes your posts, the comments, and by some power i can’t yet fathom, starts liking all all the comments you left the past few weeks on other people’s blogs. Did you get any of these yet? i call them stalker bots.

I have just over a 1,000 followers (some of which appear to be commercial sites), but I only follow about 150 bloggers. I like to read the posts of those bloggers I follow and if I tried to read 1,000+ posts a day, I wouldn’t have time to do anything else, much less write my own posts. I do read at least a few posts of those who follow me and/or comment on my posts to see if I want to follow them, but I can’t follow them all, so I’m picky. It’s just a fact of life. There aren’t enough hours in the day and I can’t imagine following 3,000 blogs, like you do…or did.

    1. Well, they don’t all post every day. Some post once or twice a month – and blog once or twice a month so I don’t expect a like or comment from them except once or twice. Some post two, three times a week. Others post several times a day. I don’t go over my reader every day, only on the days I post something or when I have time. But if a blogger leaves a like or a comment on one of my posts on a day I’m not blogging, I still return the favor.

  13. This is how I have solve that problem because I follow everybody back!
    On the app you can set notifications for the people you want interact with, so I really only go through my notifications and interact with the people who interact with me and then I don’t need to slog through a huge reader daily, however I do do that occasionally and catch some posts here and there…
    The bottom line is if I follow somebody and interact with them for a month or so and they never return the favor or follow back, I just disengage, I love the community and I am following so many people now if somebody doesn’t want to interact with me then so be it! Their loss, LOL!

    1. The way i see, there are different types of bloggers. some will only drop by whenever a particular tag is mentioned, others never miss a post, some drop by occasionlly, on random posts. I kept those, even if they only drop a like once every month or so – maybe they don’t have enough time to gothrough all my posts or whatever. But then there are the bloggers who follow, wait for you to follow back, then go and unfollow you. it’s these bloggers that are annoying me.

      1. Oh I completely agree! I never unfollow anybody I just don’t feel compelled to engage with them, LOL

        But people seem to pull this follow unfollow nonsense on many social platforms, and I’m not sure why they don’t realize people have caught on???

  14. Your July books were interesting! I am having kind of a slow reading month. I am easily distracted by lots of different things…one of them was the movie Thor Ragnarok that I watched 6 times! I always try to respond so that it feels as though we are chatting! Hopefully that works for you!

      I don’t think i’ve ever watched a movie more than twice. I’ve definitely never read a book more than three times, and those i can count on the fingers of one hand and still have fingers left to spare.

  15. OK, reading some of these comments make me want to stop blogging all together. I mean, we’re going to get petty about who likes our blog enough to comment even like or give me a 🙂 I don’t care! To me it shows that somebody is reading it, maybe likes it, and is willing to take the time to comment. Y’all are just mean. I got into this to 1. Express myself. 2. Help others. 3. Have my writing seen and in som cases paid for. 4. Have fun.
    I think some people think they are all that and this blogging thing is some kind of popularity contest. They are the ones who are sad.

    1. i understand your point, Kim. But imagine you have a lot of followers who are regulars, always like your posts, leave comments – like you, for example. You always drop by on my blog.
      and then there’s this type of blogger who notices that you follow everyone back, and they take advantage. and it gets to a point where there are so many posts on your reader that i don’t have the time to go through them all, and people like the regular bloggers, like you, get ignored because i didn’t have time to check if you posted today. Do you unfollow the bloggers who never paid you any attention, never left you a like and now are on wasting your time when you should’ve been checking the posts of people who always check back on your blog?

  18. i don’t do the follow for follow thing. i only follow people who have similar interests to me e.g. the writing process, books and writing. i notice on Instagram that if you don’t follow back then people unfollow you. i’ve been told there’s an app that does this. hard to know with the whole social media arena. i just plod along doing my thing, not worrying too much about who does what, but i’m much more aware now about commenting on people’s blogs if they take the time to comment on mine. don’t know if i should be doing that on Instagram too. would be so time consuming, and Instagram seems so transient to me, but i put up an image every day because i enjoy taking pics and am trying to improve my framing skills 🙂 so … yes, food for thought: follow for follow does not seem authentic to me.

    1. I don’t do instagram – it’s a visual platform and i’m blind – so i can’t really say. I didn’t follow everyone who followed me when i first started blogging, or even like and comment back. it’s a thing i caught on quickly though,, since whenever i left a like or a comment or a follow, the favor was returned. Most bloggers follow this pattern, so it isn’t a lost cause, but there’s a percentage that is out there to collect follows. When my following list eventually grew to epic proportions, i realized i could no longer handle it. I wasn’t gettting to the posts of bloggers who have become friends because other bloggers post congested my reader. So it was time to start cleaning up .

  20. It’s interesting to see other people complaining about this and dealing with it.

    Personally, I treat following like marriage in a way. I exercise great caution between hitting that follow button in the first place. (So many different factors.)

    But it’s inevitable to “connect” to some people you will grow distant with at some point. I’m a bit torn on the topic you presented in this post. I don’t like to unfollow just because they don’t follow me. I like their content, but I understand that they might not like mine. However, I do reach a certain point with some of them, where I get ZERO feedback. You know, you could try ONCE in a while. Say SOMETHING.
    What annoys me the most is when not only I don’t get any comments from them, but when I comment, and all they say is “thank you”. You clearly don’t have the time for me, so why am I wasting my time on you?

    1. Totally agree. I leave comments, not 2 words about why I liked or didn’t like what they wrote. But here is my pet peeves. The ones who hit the like button but never open the post. When your likes outnumber your opens. I’ve caught people doing that. You can tell who if the post is new. Maybe they think they will helping you but the aren’t.

      1. i’ll be honest and say that i don’t open every post i come across. I read the posts on the reader, so i check out the title, the first few lines, and if it’s something that interests me, i continue reading, sometimes leave a comment. otherwise i like and go on to the next.

  21. I try to comment on blogs, but I’ve been bad since imon vacation. I’m trying to read as many as time and internet allows, but I’ve been very very lax about commenting!!

  22. You and I must have read each other’s mind. When you have blogged awhile 4 years for me you can’t possibly follow all of the blogs you’ve liked. So now I follow someone if they have something to say that is more than just a dairy of the crisis in their life. You almost can tell those who will slowly get tired of blogging. I ended up looking at a list of blogs I followed and how long it had been since they posted anything. If it was over three months I unfollowed them. That is my first go’round. They aren’t going to clutter up my reader. Sometimes I just get away from a blog. Now I’ll go back and pull up the rest starting with the oldest one and catch up, because they’ve forgotten about me, too. Go say hi and see what’s up. Reconnect. What good is a follower you never see. What good is a follower who is just a stat. That doesn’t build readership. I’m writing a book. I’m leaving potential customer by the wayside if I don’t go show some love. I have my regulars but I’d like to have more. What is hard for me is that I have 3 blogs for different things, 3 fb pages ( I don’t spend much time in Twitter, g+ and the others although my posts go there. And a website and several music websites for streaming my original music. Add recording Music and making videos and writing my book to the mix. If I just blogged I’d have more time

    I check every blog who follows me but I don’t follow those I know I won’t read. Anyone (like you) who likes or comments is my reminder to return favor. It reminded me that your a writer and that’s important for me to follow. So . . . Thanks for coming!   23. People follow to get follows and immediately unfollow on Twitter too. It’s super irritating!
    I used to follow back everyone, but now I only do if they’re another writer or I’m interested in the things they blog about. That’s still quite a lot of people because I’m interested in a lot of things 🙂

  25. Good for you for unfollowing “hollow follows.” I think we all get follows that never turn into reciprocal relationships. I let them sit for a while and then I go back an clean up my list too. It makes for a better blogging experience. It’s about time for me to do the same. 😀

  26. You make me happy I never subscribed to the ‘follow back’ strategy. I do follow blogs I want to read, are in my genre, and always comment/like back for those who visit me. Like you, I do clean out my reader out often. When the ‘weekly digest’ comes in for people I can’t even remember, I am inclined to unfollow.

  27. I have this issue too, Jina. I’ve always followed back…but I’ve noticed some disappear. I need to do a WP deep clean. I’m tired of missing posts of people I actually interact with because my feed is going insane.

It’s a shame you’ve had to unfollow people Even though I have nowhere near those sort of numbers I also know that a lot of people have liked a post, probably without reading it, and then followed just for a follow back. I’ve stopped following back unless there are several posts I enjoy on a blog. But, there are also some followers that I love because I know their likes are genuine and I’ve followed them back and enjoy what they do too.

    1. yes, i follow some blogs that never followed back or liked any of my posts, but i enjoy what they publish, so i keep them around.
      Also, if it’s not a return like or comment, i’d be lying if i said i read every single post on my feed. I do read the title, the first few lines, and if it’s something that interests me, i continue reading. Otherwise, if i stopped to read every word on a post, i’d still be reading last march’s posts.

  34. Well not to clutter up your life, with the rants of a girl who was cheated on. I do not have one follower in this whole world of WordPress, but I needed somewhere to chronicle my life and what I was going through to put things in perspective. I’m glad you listed some good books. I’m for the 1st time in almost 9 years to live on my own again and I had to move away from him and cut all ties, which also meant I had to move away from my family and that’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Leaving him that was easy, I just realized one day that I was living and sleeping with the devil. Anywho I’ve decided not to have a tv in my new place. I have many other things I want to submerge myself into. It’s hard to do anything for yourself or focus on your on health or well-being when your being gaslighted. So my list is as follows: I want to read books again, I want to hike and see beautiful things, I want to sew and make cloth books for babies (my grandmother taught me how and I want her to know I will carry on this tradition), focus on my business and my work and I want to find creative outlets to find me again. So feel free to msg me any ideas you have to occupy all this new found freedom starring me in the face, “Saying what’s up? Now what?”
    I am so glad I found your post, indeed I’m actually grateful because I have a list of books to read. I’m old fashioned though, love to have the book in hand and find a nice shade tree to sit under and escape from the world around me. Hope I can find them in the library.

  35. I do want more people to read. I look at it as a loose agreement to read the stuff, it it catches my eye while I scroll through .. great I like to read . I generally try to post something relevant to the post or funny or stupid but it also proves I’ve read it.

    1. Yes, most people do that, but sometimes a simple i agree or i loved this or something does work too. I wonder at times when i get coments like that, but still, someone took the time to scroll through and leave a comment and that too is appreciated.
